Towing Capacity for the Heaviest Trailers

The 2026 GMC Sierra HD tows up to 22,390 lbs as the GMC Sierra 2500 HD and up to 36,000 lbs as the GMC Sierra 3500 HD when properly equipped, so adding a bigger trailer later does not mean trading trucks. A 6.6-liter Duramax turbo-diesel V8 puts out 470 horsepower through a 10-speed automatic transmission, which holds engine speed steady on a long grade. The 2026 RAM 2500 tows up to 20,000 lbs with the 6.7-liter Cummins turbo-diesel inline-six and up to 17,750 lbs with the 6.4-liter HEMI V8, each paired with an eight-speed automatic.

2026 GMC Sierra HD Cargo Payload and MultiPro Tailgate

Payload Ratings That Carry More Weight

The new GMC truck carries up to 4,049 lbs of payload as the GMC Sierra 2500 HD and up to 7,290 lbs as the GMC Sierra 3500 HD when properly equipped, so gravel, lumber, and tools can ride together on one trip instead of two. An available MultiPro® Tailgate gives you more ways to load, and integrated bed steps save you the climb over the side. The 2026 RAM 2500 is rated for up to 3,930 lbs with the gas V8 and up to 3,600 lbs with the diesel, which leaves you less margin once the bed fills up.
